Experimental and Field Trial Data

Cryptosporidiosis was confirmed with Diagnostic tests:
Tests confirmed the presence of cryptosporidial oocysts at high levels. In trial 2, 12/14 calves tested strongly positive for cryptosporidial oocysts, with rotavirus present in only a limited number of calves
No salmonella or other pathogens were isolated.

The following data was part of a randomised, double blind trial, with the operator, and farm manager unaware of which product was the treatment and which was the control.

  1. Lower Volumes of Electrolyte

Treatments of a calf to full recovery is lower with KRYPTADE from Day 1 compared with the same base electrolyte formulation – ENERVADE.

From day 1, calves were brighter and more alert, requiring less electrolytes. This improvement continued over the next 3 days

2. Lower Oocyst output

There was a strong trend (p=0.06) for the oocyst count to be lowered between days 1 and 4 in the group treated with beta-cyclodextrin. Low output is strongly correlated with firmer faeces.

3. Faster Recovery of Appetite

The rate of return to entire milk intake is earlier with KRYPTADE compared with the same electrolyte (ENERVADE) without beta-cyclodextrin – with 50 – 80% of calves returning to milk, 24 hours earlier.

4. Reduced Total Electrolyte

KRYPTADE is a world first; an electrolyte that improves recovery powerfully, giving a faster, and gentler recovery for scouring calves affected by cryptosporidiosis. It is a New Zealand researched formulation of electrolytes with beta-cyclodextrin, extra amino-acids, soluble dietary fibre, seaweed and prebiotic carbohydrates.

The only difference between the treatment of each group of calves was the difference in the base electrolyte. Both solutions had beta-cyclodextrin in their formulation. An earlier return of appetite to milk is seen with the isotonic beta-cyclodextrin electrolyte (KRYPTADE) compared with a commercial hypertonic solution(high energy). The commercial brand had beta-cyclodextrin added. The delay in the return of appetite with the hypertonic solution shows an extension of the period of time off milk. In my opinion the reason for this is intestinal discomfort delaying the recovery. This discomfort is reduced with the use of KRYPTADE – an isotonic electrolyte allowing an earlier recovery of appetite.

Conclusions:

KRYPTADE has been designed to give a powerful rehydration formulation with faster and gentler recovery to ensure an earlier return to appetite. It identifies for the first time:

  • the importance of isotonic solutions being kinder, and gentler on the calf,
    and
  • the risk of hypertonic High Energy electrolytes as causing delayed recovery to milk for calves with infectious scours.

Recommendations:

Only use isotonic electrolytes on calves with infectious scours, particularly cryptosporidial scours, if you require the earliest possible return of appetite.
